Kreiswerke Barnim, Business auf Rädern and Velocity Mobility cooperate for Barnimer lighthouse project of the traffic turnaround in rural areas

True to the motto of Kreiswerke Barnim “A successful path emerges when you walk it together”, three strong partners have come together to realize a lighthouse project for sustainable mobility in rural areas at Werneuchen station. An e-bike rental station with four pedelecs and two e-bikes was built here in April 2021. The bikes and the software for the new BARshare BIKE rental station are supplied by Velocity Mobility, a mobility service provider based in Aachen, Germany. The station will be set up and supervised by the Hoppegarten-based company Business auf Rädern.

Initial situation

BARshare, the e-mobility service of Kreiswerke Barnim GmbH, has already been offering various vehicle models for both private users and main users, such as administrations and companies, in the Barnim district with its sharing fleet since 2019.

So far, Kreiswerke has relied on various e-car models as well as cargo bikes. The agile pedelecs from Velocity Mobility now add another attractive means of transportation to the already extensive range of mobility services in the Barnimer Land region. In the course of this, BARshare will live up to its claim of fulfilling various mobility needs in the Barnim region on a new level.

Location

The location of Werneuchen was chosen deliberately: the district of Barnim has invested 120,000 euros in the construction of the mobility station in order to support the current developments in the town of 9,200 inhabitants: On the one hand, there is a growing number of commuters in Werneuchen, and on the other hand, the Barnim town has been enjoying an increasing reputation as a tourist destination for several years, attracting many day-trippers, especially at weekends.

The new mobility station, which in addition to the pedelecs also has a Renault ZOE from the BARshare fleet as well as a public charging point of the emobility charging network Barnim, is intended to support the developing local mobility volume with a sustainable and climate-friendly mobility offer and complements the existing regional train connection on the RB 25 line of the Niederbarnimer Eisenbahngesellschaft, which enables daily trips between Werneuchen and Berlin Ostkreuz.

Expansion stages of the project

The technical control of the digitally usable BARshare BIKE Station is ensured by Velocity Mobility and integrated into the already existing BARshare app. This can be downloaded free of charge by BARshare users for booking and renting BARshare BIKE bikes. Booking the BARshare e-car is also possible via the app.

The necessary know-how for the technical support of the BARshare BIKE rental station is provided by Business auf Rädern, a system service provider for modern fleet management based in Hoppegarten. Its offer is aimed at small and medium-sized enterprises as well as municipalities, associations and the tourism sector. Thanks to its many years of extensive experience in the field of e-bike mobility, Business auf Rädern is ideally suited as a regionally based partner for the maintenance of the BARshare BIKE rental station and the bikes.

Conclusion

With the Barnim district, Velocity Mobility’s station-based pedelec rental system is now also opening up the rural area outside Berlin, thus adding an important catchment area to its portfolio. The construction of the first station is intended to serve as a model of modern and sustainable mobility and to encourage the widespread expansion of the system in Barnim and the surrounding area.

There is a demo station there for testing.
